World of paper: variety of designer papers –

Paper for scrapbooking. varieties. | scrapbook – additional materials for printing for scrapbooking

Ah, paper, everything would seem simple and clear, but in fact there is a lot hidden behind this name. Almost every product consists of 70% paper. We glue it, sew it on, but don’t think about the fact that accidentally choosing the wrong sheet can ruin the whole job. It seems to you that buying paper is the easiest thing, but I think differently.

I will try to tell as much as possible about this thin, elegant “skeleton” of scrapbooking.

You must understand that scrapbooking paper is special, it must meet certain requirements. When I go to a store to buy it, the first thing I look for is that it is archival and also does not contain acids (Acid Free) and lignin (Lignin-Free). The listed criteria are responsible for the lifetime of your scrap work. It is very important! But how can you find out whether the paper contains these substances or not? On some sheets it is directly written that “does not contain acids and lignin”; you can also find a special marking in the form of an infinity sign. It will tell you that the paper meets the standard of the country of origin. If doubts still persist, the presence of acid can be checked using a litmus solution (a crimson color will appear).

Where do I buy paper? There is no particular problem with this. Today you can walk into any office supply, art or scrapbooking store and buy whatever your heart desires! And the choice will also please you. You can choose the size that is convenient for you for work; at the moment, several formats are most often made: 15x15cm, 20x20cm and 30.5×30.5 cm, others are less common. There are also options to choose the desired density; it varies between 70 – 400 g/sq.m. Please note that some sheets are single sided and some are double sided. By the way, this often helps.

Now I propose to talk about the types of paper and which is suitable for what.

Backing paper

1.

Cardstock

(or cardboard). I often make postcards and use this kind of paper as the basis for them. The store has it in the form of blanks for postcards. It is also perfect for creating boxes, albums and as a passe-partout. And what beautiful cut-out figures you can make from it, it’s just a dream.

It is dense (120-300 g/sq.m), plain or with a pattern, figured, smooth or can have different textures, embossing and effects (sparkles, glitter, foiling, etc.). On the market today you can find cardstock in all the colors of the rainbow, and this can’t help but lift your spirits.

Great for embossing. Fully saturated with paint, so if the sheet is blue, then when you tear it inside you will see the same color.

I want to warn you that when you make a fold, be careful, as the fibers can tear and then your work will look damaged.

1.1.

Cardstock with inner layer.

It has the same qualities as cardstock, only there is a layer of a different color inside it. It is wonderfully suitable for the torn edge technique, as well as embossing; if, after embossing, you carefully rub the top layer, the core will appear, which makes the embossing attractive. Can be used as a basis for cards and albums.

2.

Corrugated cardboard.

I first became acquainted with this type of paper when I saw packaging boxes. Does everyone remember? As a child, I made a house out of them for Barbie.

So, it is hard (the density depends on the number of layers), single-colored and multi-colored, most often it serves as the basis, for example, for an album cover, a photo frame, and is good as a decoration. Despite its density, you need to be careful when working with this material, as it is easily deformed. At the same time, we must not forget that this type of cardboard in most cases contains lignin and therefore its use in some works is strictly prohibited.

3.

Chipboard

– a very durable type of cardboard. You can find both thin and thick up to 5 mm. The color scheme is dominated by white or even gray. It is difficult to bend such cardboard. It makes excellent blanks for albums of various shapes. The chipboard is also suitable for making jewelry, for example, beech trees, curls, figurines and much more.

4.

Printing cardboard with a coated outer layer.

It would seem, well, what can I say, it is also very durable and tough. Has a smooth surface. It will make a strong base for your album. Great for making packaging boxes. What’s the highlight? Unlike other types of cardboard, it produces beautiful printouts. The coated layer conveys colors well after printing.

5.

Beer cardboard

very durable and lightweight. Density more than 500 g/sq.m. It is multi-layered, so it is very difficult to bend such cardboard, and unsightly cracks may appear. Typically white. They are produced in various sizes, but most often in large formats, for example, 70 x 100 cm. For cutting, it is better to use a knife. Despite its thickness, due to its porous structure it allows stitching by machine. It makes excellent covers for scrapbooking, as well as binding.

6.

Binding (cover) cardboard.

The name speaks for itself. It is intended for the production of binding and covers. Density from 750-2075 g/sq.m. It is quite thick and strong. The color scheme is dominated by a gray-brown tint.

7.

Paper for watercolors.

This type of paper is excellent for coloring stamps; thanks to its porous structure, it absorbs paint perfectly. Dense, the surface can be smooth or rough depending on the processing methods. You can easily make blanks for cards from it, as well as wonderful flowers.

The color of the paper is the same on all sides, even when cut. Mainly used for drawing with pastels, but it is also suitable as a basis for postcards, decoration, mat.

9.

Photo paper

. White, the surface can be glossy or matte, single-sided or double-sided, on a magnetic basis, in various formats, density varies between 70-325 g/sq.m. It has high color rendering, and the glossy one conveys bright colors better, but the matte one is much cheaper. This paper is used for printing photographs, backgrounds and pictures.

Paper for design and decoration

10.

Paper for scrapbooking.

Density from 100-200 g/sq.m. This is exactly the main type of paper, which was created specifically for scrapbooking. Today it meets all requirements. It can be double-sided or single-sided, figured, plain or multi-colored with a pattern, glitter, laser cutting, with a velvet or corduroy pattern, with foil, industrial embossing.

In the store you can find the following paper of various brands and styles:

You can buy either a sheet or a set. As a rule, it acts as a background image. The same thing happens with various pictures that can be cut out and used as decoration, for example, various tags, etc. You can try to make flowers from it.

11.

Kraft paper (bag)

comes in different densities and textures.

It is distinguished by its self-sufficiency, very durable. As a rule, such paper is used for packaging and is sold in rolls, sheets, or in the form of envelopes and bags. By the way, corrugated cardboard is made from just such paper. But it has also taken a strong place in scrapbooking; it is used as a background for cards, pages, and for making decorations. Recently it has become fashionable to use it in a crumpled form.

12.

Tracing paper (or vellum)

stands out among other types of paper for its thinness – 40-120 g/sq.m. How else can you distinguish it at first glance? It is transparent or translucent. Walk into the store and your eyes widen, here you are, matte tracing paper, colored, with various embossing, with a pattern, with a figured edge, with various coatings, textures. You can even find tracing paper that will have a pattern and fit a certain collection of paper. Designers are now developing more and more types of tracing paper. And our main task is to find the right use for it. So what can it be used for?

Journaling. The text printed on tracing paper and attached to the main background looks very impressive. Not every home has a printer that would allow you to print on a sheet of 30 x 30 cm, so this method will help you out a lot; if you choose very thin tracing paper, it will be practically invisible.

With the help of tracing paper, you can give your work lightness, airiness and grace. You ask how? Take a rub, for example, a butterfly and apply it to tracing paper, cut it out with a small margin around the edges, you can say that the butterfly has come to life. You can also use tracing paper as a backing, this will help soften the color, cut out flowers, petals and various figures come out great, you can place it on top of the photo. If you print a design on it or make it using stamping, you will get an excellent overlay. Add more effects and then you get indescribable beauty. Try embossing with it, it turns out elegant. In general, you can experiment, try and try again.

But tracing paper also has its disadvantages, which you need to be very careful about:

– some species cannot tolerate high temperatures (this affects printing);

– sometimes it is not possible to accurately emboss on it, since it is less pliable;

is brittle, so if you plan to make folds, choose tracing paper of lower density.

12.

Lace paper

very thin, similar in density to a napkin. It will add romance and tenderness to your work. It comes in a variety of colors and acts as a stand-alone piece that highlights a particular style, such as Shabbychic. You can also use it to make dresses for wedding cards.

13.

Crepe paper.

This type of paper is not durable, but it is waterproof; it is thin and has a corrugated surface. As a rule, it is sold in rolls 50 cm wide. This paper comes in various colors, plain, metallized color, metallized two-color (transitional). Great for packaging, often used in floristry. It is malleable and easily takes shape, so in scrapbooking it makes excellent flowers that will decorate any work.

Silence paper

(tissue wrapping paper). Its properties are somewhat reminiscent of crepe paper, only without the corrugation. It is thin, translucent, light, delicate, very plastic, crumples, takes any shape you like, some call it paper plasticine. Available in all colors of the rainbow, plain or patterned. Just like crepe, it is most often used for packaging, but it makes excellent flowers and pom-poms. It will be difficult to print text on it, since it is very fragile and the printer will simply jam it.

15.

Handmade paper

It is distinguished by its density and strength. The surface is rough and textured. The main condition for making this paper is your imagination, you can add sparkles, glitter, various seeds, petals, flowers, blades of grass, pencil graphite, coffee, zest, beads, threads, paints, and whatever your heart desires. As a rule, they are made in sunny weather; the speed of drying of the sheet and fading of the colors depends on the sun. Such paper will give your work individuality, because you won’t find another one like it anywhere. It is great for making flowers, packaging, covers, decorating pages, cards, etc.

Even at home, you can manually apply a drawing to paper, this method is called Monotype. When a drawing is transferred from glass to paper, the brightness depends on how hard you pressed the paper and in which direction you tore it. The result is incomparable drawings that can be used for the background of cards and pages.

15.1.

Rice paper

It comes in different densities and textures, plain, colored, or with a pattern. Very thin and loose. Excellent for decoupage, as well as decorating cards and albums, it produces very delicate flowers. It can be used as background paper, in which case you will need to put something under it to emphasize the beauty of the texture.

15.2.

Silk paper

feels very similar to soft thin fabric, this is due to the fact that the composition contains silk thread. It can be classified as premium class, because such paper will make your work simply luxurious.
Silk paper can be used to decorate anything, including invitations, albums and much more. Flowers made from this paper are amazing.

15.3.

Mulberry

– This is thick, rough, loose paper of various colors. It takes the given shape well, especially if wet. This paper can be plain, colored, interspersed with plant fibers, blades of grass, threads, and glitter. Most often used to decorate your work, but also suitable for painting and packaging. Used for the torn edge technique, after tearing, very beautiful fluffy edges are obtained. Craftswomen use this paper to make flowers and petals.

15.4.

Banana paper

thin, somewhat reminiscent of rice. Fiber paper comes in both natural light shades and all colors of the rainbow. Perfect for decorating your work, as well as decoupage.

15.5.

Onion paper.

Used to decorate pages, boxes, cards and much more.

It is thin and consists of onion fibers.

15.6.

Ecolux paper

very soft, pleasant to the touch, has a textured surface .

Can be used as a background. Often used for packaging. It’s very pliable, so you can really use your imagination with it; try not cutting it, but tearing it, the edges are very impressive.

15.7.

Liquid paper.

When I saw this type of paper, I immediately remembered liquid wallpaper. The operating principle is the same. It is applied with a spatula, like a paste, on any surface, after drying it turns out to be decorative paper, plus you can get creative and add various sparkles, paint and other things, I think then the work will be absolutely incomparable. You can also make separate sheets from this paste, for example, apply it to polyethylene and when everything dries, you get excellent paper. The convenience of this type is that if you don’t like something, you can wash it off before it dries.

Бумага для скрапбукинга. Разновидности.

We’ve covered most types of paper that can be used for scrapbooking, but how do you go about buying exactly what you need? For example, when I decided to do my first job for the first time, without thinking I went to the online store and bought everything at a discount. As a result, now this paper is just lying there, and I just can’t find a worthy use for it. Never do this; I’ll call this behavior a beginner’s mistake. Think about what you specifically want to do and then select a specific type of paper for your work. You can also buy beautiful paper that inspires you to do something new.

If you still can’t choose a paper, then try choosing one based on the theme or style of your work. Each style is suitable for certain colors and motifs. I do not recommend immediately taking paper with a pattern, since it is self-sufficient in itself. I have a lot of this paper, it’s certainly beautiful, but I don’t know how to use it. If you are making an album, then buy a set, since the paper in it is selected according to colors, designs, and it combines perfectly with each other. Don’t type too many of the same. It’s better to try a little of everything, and then settle on what really suits you.

Since office paper does not stand out for its quality and does not meet the criteria we need, I would not recommend printing drawings on it or doing any work, for example, an album, since it will not last long, plus the paint fades quickly. It is worth printing on photo paper, matte or glossy.

I advise you to choose double-sided paper, as it is more versatile; from one sheet you have 2 types of paper that combine perfectly with each other. Plus it is denser, you can make boxes, flowers, tags, mini albums

I definitely don’t recommend using newspapers, magazines, or some types of cardboard for scrapbooking; they use low-quality paper, which can ruin your creation.

All photos are taken from the Internet.

Go for it! Good luck to everyone!

How to choose paper for creating flowers and decorations – article from Leonardo

07/02/2021

For the first time, corrugated, crinkled paper, known to us all from childhood, appeared around the middle of the 19th century. Perhaps someone simply made a mistake when making regular paper and received defective sheets instead of the usual smooth ones – with a small fold. And I discovered that such paper has interesting qualities: soft, elastic, with a rough surface, it can stretch and curl, take on different shapes.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

Such a useful product could not go unnoticed: in 1856, a patent was issued in Great Britain for the production of paper, which in English was called crepe paper. And they called it corrugated in France, from where it later came to Russia. It is interesting that both names of paper – corrugated and creped – are assigned to different types of this material. Corrugated paper
more dense and has large folds, while crepe
thinner, softer and more pliable. Therefore, their scope today varies slightly.

And at the time when crumpled paper first appeared, the first to use it were in fashion and trade. At first, this material was used as a lining in ladies’ hats: being both pliable and elastic, it helped the hats better keep their shape. Then they began to wrap fragile glass things in crumpled paper. And in 1871, according to sources, the American Albert Johnson first made artificial flowers from it. Thus, a new type of paper found its true purpose and began to be actively used in floristry and other types of arts and crafts.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

The secret of such popularity of corrugated paper among florists is in those very folds. By smoothing them with your fingers in the right places, and somewhere, on the contrary, twisting them, you can easily form flower petals that are hardly distinguishable from real, living ones.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

And most importantly, flowers made from them will not wither and will delight the eye for a long time. In addition, since they are made from a natural material, paper, you don’t have to worry about disposing of unsuccessful samples. Therefore, beginners can safely master this type of creativity: the costs for it are minimal, there is no harmful waste, and even with little effort and without any experience, you can create decorative miracles from corrugated paper.

For example, give sweet bouquets to your loved ones – flowers created in the “sweet design” style. Making such a flower is quite simple: you need to take a candy, wrap it in corrugated paper, secure it on floral wire, then cover this blank with prepared petals and decorate the stem with green tape or the same corrugated paper.

And what interesting photo sessions you can arrange with life-sized paper flowers – these pictures are sure to make an impression! In addition, giant flowers can become an unusual interior decoration. For example, you can mount such a handmade masterpiece on the wall. It will definitely be much more spectacular than an ordinary reproduction.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

And, of course, you can make many other crafts and decorations from crumpled paper, including with children. For example, almost any holiday can be decorated with garlands or balls glued together from paper.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

Instructions on how to make them are easy to find on the Internet. So, if you keep a small supply of corrugated paper in your home, no holiday will ever take you by surprise.

For example, these paper pumpkins with sweet filling for Halloween can be easily made by children themselves – you just need to give them an idea and join in their fun creativity.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

If you are captivated by paper floristry, then mastering it will also be quite easy. And first you will need paper. But which one exactly: corrugated or creped? Remember the difference?

For example, Blumentag corrugated paper
, from a well-known brand of floristry products on the Russian market, has a high density of 180 g/m2 and the ability to stretch well – almost 3 times (stretchability 260%), and is distinguished by flexible edges. All this makes this paper indispensable in the production of flowers such as roses, anemones, peonies, and ranunculus. Thanks to the rich palette of paper, the flowers turn out very realistic. It is also good for making children’s crafts and various home decor.

<img alt="" src="https://leonardo.ru/images/articles/149//9

.jpg”>

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

Blumentag crepe paper
differs from its “relative” in being more soft and less dense. Therefore, it will not work to stretch it like a corrugated one – it is too thin. But flowers with lush, “shaggy” buds, which do not need to maintain a strict shape, are a sight to behold. Also, thanks to its softness and lightness, it makes wonderful holiday decorations – pompoms. You can also use crepe paper in appliqués.

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

World of paper: variety of designer papers -

Also, in addition to practicing paper floristry, you will need:

glue gun and sticks
to them – for gluing petals and leaves (regular stationery glue or PVA will cause the paper to get wet and lose its shape);

floral wire
– to create a flexible stem that can be bent in any direction (do not forget, the heavier the flower, the thicker the wire is needed);

floral ribbon
(tape tape) – elastic and waterproof, with a slight adhesive effect, it will easily cover the stems of your artificial flowers.

Making paper flowers is a fun hobby and you’re sure to find many like-minded people and mentors. There are many lessons on this type of creativity on the Internet. Also in Moscow every year there is an exhibition of paper art “Bud”, where you can get a closer look at the works of famous artists. You can start by studying our step-by-step creativity lessons: watch, get inspired and start creating your own paper masterpieces!

Characteristics of paper for office equipment

Four basic parameters allow you to get a general idea of the product: format, density, whiteness and class.

Sheet format

Office paper sizes are determined by generally accepted standards. As a rule, in Europe the “A” format is used with different widths and lengths:

A0 – 84.1*118.9 cm

A1 – 59.4*84.1 cm

A2 – 42.0*59.4 cm

A3 – 29.7*42.0 cm

A4 – 21.0*29.7 cm

A0–A3 formats are in demand for printing drawings, posters, and various posters. The most popular size is A4. Used as a consumable material for any copying equipment (copiers, printers, MFPs). This format is indispensable for printing contracts, letters, advertising materials, catalogs, and various forms.

A5 (half the area of an A4 sheet) and A6 (half of an A5) formats are also used. These sizes are suitable for printing product cards, information leaflets, advertising brochures, postcards and other small products.

These technical characteristics of office paper are selected exclusively for office tasks. Most printer models support printing in A3–A5 formats. Working with large sizes already requires special equipment.

Paper Weight Explanation

Density is measured in grams per square meter (gsm). The standard value for office needs is 75–90 gsm. m. Density 80 g/sq. m is considered universal because it is well suited for digital copiers and printing machines, including laser and inkjet models. This type of paper is called offset paper.

To print photos, office paper is not enough – to print a colorful image on an inkjet printer, you need to use thick glossy paper, or even better – special paper for inkjet printing.

Coated materials are also used for higher quality printing. They vary in density from 90 to 170 g/sq.m, but have a smoother surface, matte or glossy. The special coating makes the sheets more rigid and the printing brighter. For presentation products, coated paper is used.

For more complex tasks – printing booklets, business cards, printed products, materials of varying density and quality are used. Coated paper can be up to 250gsm. m. Designer – has different colors, different textures, density up to 250 g/sq. m. Cardboard is an even denser material, coated on one side, from 230 to 350 g/sq.m. m.

Density is of great importance in the proper operation of the printer. So, when using thin paper (less than 75 g), the device can capture 2-3 sheets at once. For this reason, jams and jams of sheets occur in the printer. Therefore, for low-density materials, it is necessary to reconfigure the MFP and set new heating and pressure parameters. Or don’t use them.

When printing on heavy sheets, the printer generates more heat to help the toner adhere to the surface. If the device does not support printing on high-density materials, this will inevitably lead to smearing, abrasion of toner on the surface, and in the worst case, failure.

Whiteness and brightness value

Whiteness is a visual property of a surface that characterizes its proximity to the reference white in terms of brightness. To evaluate whiteness, manufacturers use two characteristics:

Brightness according to ISO.

Represents the following ratio: reflected light (specifically blue) to the amount absorbed as a percentage. This parameter does not exceed 100%. The assessment determines the quality of transmission of shades of green and blue, and allows you to evaluate the degree of contrast when performing monochrome printing (including text materials).

Whiteness according to CIE.

Indicates the ratio between reflected light waves to the actual spectral width (in percent). The reference (theoretical) white color reflects 100% of light. But only when ideal lighting is created. The value can be increased in low light conditions by introducing fluorescent substances into the paper. The CIE value may exceed 100%.

What is office paper of maximum whiteness – there is no definite answer. It can have a bluish or creamy tint, but still have identical ISO and CIE characteristics. Therefore, when studying this parameter, it is recommended to be guided by the desired print result.
