Types of decal techniques: their pros and cons

Hot decal technology is an excellent option for advertising, applying a logo and decoration to products made of ceramics, earthenware, glass or porcelain. Plates with unique designs or mugs with cool inscriptions: printing any ideas is possible using this method. Clear advantages of the technique:

  • Clarity of colors (bright colors and their saturation do not fade with prolonged use).
  • Wear resistance (the pattern does not wear off or deform when in contact with detergents and sponges).
  • Printing on different surfaces (bottom, handle, bends, inside, etc.).

Special thermal equipment is used for hot decaling

Cold decal technology is used on products that cannot be fired. This method speeds up production, but makes the design more vulnerable to damage. However, it is used to create the popular chameleon mug.

How to use this “decal printing” chart?

Suppose you need to print a decal of 333 sheets of a given format, where there will be full-color printing, plus 3 additional colors, one of which is gold with 15-20% fill. To calculate we take the following: 1. The cost of full-color photoforms (1st sheet) is 6000 rubles2.

The cost of a gold photo form (1st sheet) is 3000 rubles3. The cost of a photo form of 2 additional colors (1st sheet) is 1500 rubles * 2 = 3000 rubles (we count only two forms, since we already counted the third one as gold) 4. We count the cost of one sheet (column for 300 sheets at the intersection of the lines “full color” and “cost of additional color”)

– 134 rubles (9 rubles * 3 colors) = 155 rubles 5. We calculate the percentage of increase in the price of a sheet due to the addition of gold in printing – 155 rubles 75% = 271 rubles 25 kopecks This is how we got the cost of one sheet in a circulation of 333 sheets without the cost of the preparatory stage, i.e. . without the cost of the first trial print.6.

We sum up all the positions and get the cost of the entire circulation: 6000 rubles (4 photo forms in full color) (1500 rubles * 3 colors) three photo forms in additional colors (271 rubles 25 kopecks * 333 sheets) = 100826 rubles 25 kopecks with VAT final cost for the entire circulation.7. If you do not want to cut the decal along the contour with scissors (for example, if the decal is round (on a plate)), then for convenience you can coat the decal with selective varnish, in this case it will cost (increased cost of circulation)

1500 rubles (333 sheets * 3 rubles) = 2499 rubles for the entire circulation TOTAL: At the exit you receive 340 sheets of tracing paper lined for storage and transportation (we always provide 2-3% of the decal over the circulation for possible defects when sticking, so you do not need to order and pay for extra sheets for stock for the circulation) with a total cost of the entire circulation of 103,325 rubles 25 kopecks with VAT

For example, another small calculation on how to use the table, for example, we print a decal of only 25 sheets in 2 colors: 3000 rubles (25 sheets * 122 rubles) = 6050 rubles for the entire circulation including VAT!

Any decal for this format is calculated only upon request!

There is also a print format of 1000×700

Decal printing

Many of us remember transfers that were bought in childhood, soaked in water and glued to any available surface, be it a notebook, diary or refrigerator. We had no idea then that this activity was called “decoupage”, and the paper was called “decal paper” or “gummed paper” and it was processed in a special way so that when it gets wet in water, the top varnish layer with the picture is removed from this paper, which is then glued to the right place. It turns out that such decoration using the decoupage technique has been known for hundreds of years and furniture was previously decorated in this way. Of course, at that time there were no decals and they were simply decorated with cut-out pictures followed by layers of varnish, but progress did not stand still and decals or sliders appeared, which were much easier to glue and then coated with varnish for stability. Sliders have also found application in the hot decal technique, when a film with a picture is glued to dishes, ceramics, glass, coated with a special varnish and fired in an oven. After this, the dishes decorated with the picture are not afraid of water.

I would also like to say something about modeling various equipment, such as ships or airplanes. Modellers also use stickers for models, or “decals” as they call them, which are printed on the same film as decoupage cards and which we have.

Sliders for nails have also been used, when cut-out decals are glued to nails and covered with varnish. There are no limits to your imagination here, because as pictures you can use both ready-made ornaments and any pictures you like, even photographs.

We are ready to help you decorate your world with the help of decals. Using our modern equipment, we can quickly produce for you a film for printing sliders and decoupage cards, which can be anything: for light or dark surfaces, you can use paint with glitter, luminous, pearlescent, foil, rhinestones, in general, the flight of your imagination can only be limited by the range of paints produced by the world’s leading manufacturers, and this range is very large. In addition, our equipment allows us to print sheets of film up to A2 in size (420×600 mm), which will allow us to produce large-sized decoupage cards for you.

All products and prices can be viewed in our online store!
There you can buy nail sliders and blank film for printing your own sliders. We constantly hold various promotions and have a cumulative system of discounts for regular customers.

Decal technique from the company “pro-printing”

Decal technology and its features

Decal is a printing technology, the essence of which is to transfer an image onto a base using a design printed on paper. The process itself consists of several stages:

  • Print.
A design is formed in advance on gummed paper coated with dextrin or gelatin (water-soluble substances) using silk-screen or offset printing using special inks.
  • Sticker.
The finished image is moistened and then transferred to the desired surface.
  • Firing or varnishing.
Depending on the type of application, the work carried out is fixed using high-temperature equipment (hot decal) or the design is coated with colloidal varnish on a laser printer and then dried (cold decal).

It is worth noting that: a professional approach to business, the necessary knowledge and skills, modern equipment, high-quality materials are essential components of an excellent result. Experienced craftsmen know that decal:

  • Available in glossy and matte.
  • Allows the use of dyes with additives of precious metals (gold, platinum).
  • Has restrictions on the size of the picture (lines – no less than 0.1 mm, spaces – no less than 0.15 mm, etc.).
  • Divided into full color and by color.
  • It can be hot or cold.

Conclusion

So, decaling is a rather labor-intensive and complex method of printing, requiring quite a long pre-press preparation. The advantage of decaling is the fairly high wear resistance and colorfulness of the image, as well as the long service life of the branded product.

The advantage of sublimation printing is the relative simplicity of this type of application; you can order ready-made T-shirts with prints. Sublimation can be done at home, since no special equipment is required to produce the image, or to attach the print to the product. When using sublimation printing, no hot firing is required, but a simple heat press is used.

Of course, sublimation is a cheaper and more practical method of application, but it is less durable than decaling. However, for branding products, applying logos, pictures, and creating colorful gift items, sublimation printing on tableware is preferable.
