Paper, ink and drawing techniques

When I first started drawing with ink, it seemed to me that the right thing is when everything is neat and clear: the filling is absolutely the same,
the lines are perfectly straight and smooth; so I selected options so that it would be smooth to draw on paper.

And since. Ink is still my favorite material, but I have rummaged through a lot of paper. In the end, after much testing, I found what I was looking for. But at the same time I realized that the lines don’t have to be perfect. Ho-ho.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

When drawing with ink, there are 2 factors to consider. First, ink is liquid (oddly enough), and the paper should absorb this liquid. Secondly, this is the drawing technique. It’s difficult to talk about paper and ink without technical features, so first of all, a few words about it.

Let’s start with the simplest thing: you can draw with ink, or you can write out beautiful letters. You can draw with feathers, brushes, bamboo sticks, windlass and much more.
When I started listing everything with a description, I realized that there were too many beech letters, so I could make a separate post about what to draw with.

An important factor is the amount of ink in your drawing and what lines you draw. If your work is done with thin, neat lines, then smooth, even glossy paper is suitable, which does not absorb ink well, but gives almost absolute evenness. If you paint partially or completely some areas, prefer unfinished, somewhere torn, rough lines, then you need well-absorbent paper with roughness, which will give this imperfect effect when working.

By Donovan Beeson and Sophie Franz

How you transfer your draft onto paper is also important. If you draw a draft separately or, conversely, straight away with ink, then smooth glossy paper will do
perfect. If you are transferring a drawing through a light table (or window) in several thin lines, then thin paper, such as tracing paper, will be quite handy. If you can only do it on top of a draft, then your option is thicker paper.

As a rule, the choice of paper for ink falls on watercolor: it absorbs well, reacts normally to an eraser (if anything) and, as a rule, has a fairly high density. Then the choice is divided between different companies: Fabriano, Canson, Derwent or something from our country (some kind of state mark). I’ll tell you about some unusual and non-standard options.

For drawing with ink very good

suitable
tracing paper

.

Among the obvious advantages we can note:
smooth and gives smooth lines,
You can stick it on top of the draft and do without erased pencil lines.

Of the minuses
– the tracing paper itself is either yellow or yellowish in color,
– does not absorb well and there is a high probability of smudging,
– if you put your hand on the tracing paper itself, then from your hand (heat and sweat) the paper will then become deformed and bulge.

Almost all flaws (except the last one) are absent from the paper Fabriano Pergamenata

. Excellent for drawing and calligraphy, translucent with barely noticeable roughness, white, soft and absorbs ink quite well. Sold in a folder of 50 pieces, A4 format (210×297 mm), density 110 g/sq.m. Again, if compressed, then is very reminiscent of tracing paper, but white and absorbs normally

.

If this is not a mega-work, but training handwriting, then simpler paper will do

. In particular, at one time I took the folder Prof.art for sketches

(this is also a Ukrainian publishing house Shkolyanik) and drew drawings on it for the background challenge with diluted ink. The paper comes in 20 sheets per folder, A4 format and a density of 100 gsm (this is g/sq.m.) with a yellowish tint. Absorbs normally, minimal roughness. Those. quite suitable for training simple drawings.

Now about watercolor paper. There are different technologies for its production. Most sheets that can be touched and viewed. have texture. BUT! U Fabriano

yes absolutely smooth watercolor paper

. I think that this may happen with other manufacturers, but I haven’t seen it personally. I took sheets
, glued into a notebook,
of different densities and formats,
stands on them
something like a press “Hot press”

. The paper is white, thick and smooth, absorbs well, and you can erase residual pencil lines without losing your “face.”

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

If we are talking about very, very smooth paper, then this is from Palazzo folder for acrylic and graphics

. The paper there is thick, but glossy

, i.e. almost does not absorb moisture. And the pencil erases very poorly, leaving marks and dents. A4 format, 20 white sheets in a folder.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

If I understand correctly, there is also smooth paper for drawing with markers, but I personally have not used it, and it is quite expensive.

There are also options for various notebooks, including moleskines, but I don’t consider these options for serious and complex work, it’s more just for sketching, for myself, for the moment.

As you can see, there are a lot of options. Ultimately, your drawing is only as good as your skill as an artist. Paper is only an assistant in implementation; you can choose it based on your technique and your budget.

As I already wrote, I subscribed to Skillshare. And this became a magical kick for me until I got stuck with the logo. Then I started to get into a stupor, from which I just can’t get out.

However, I still managed to do something: take a course on creating patterns in Illustrator. It seems simple, but I liked it. Here’s the step-by-step work.

I originally used one of the sketches for 1page1day. I outlined it with a liner and scanned it.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

Step 2: outlining and shading in Illustrator itself.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

Here I also got a little stuck, because I tried different things: tracing with my hands and using tracing.

Then folding the pattern itself. Here my perfectionism did not allow me to finish quickly.

Plus experiments with automatic pattern creation using Illustrator’s own resources.

And finally, samples with different color palettes.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

The result is a pattern like this!

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

Of the color layouts, I liked the second one, because, as for me, it is more balanced in contrast and rhythm.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

So I used it to completely seal the sweatshirt on MaryJane (and everything that is offered and included there).

And the very last moment: a collage of what you can wear with a sweatshirt with sweet peas.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

There will be a discount on the sweatshirt for another week, to take advantage of it you need to enter the code bda3a60 in the cart. Here is the link to the store http://www.maryjane.ru/promo/238kzx/

That’s how things are! In fact, it’s so cool to finish work; in this regard, 1page1day gets in the way, taking up a lot of time. On the other hand, it also helps, because every day you draw sketches.

In order not to bother you with my gluing, I’m showing the last 4 at once. The marathon continues, it’s already the month of November and the number of pages drawn has exceeded 300, which makes my soul feel lighter, and it seems that there is a little more left.

Let’s keep cutting!

Besides the endless marathon, I still draw other things. And somehow the patterns really drew me in. In general, textile design seems to me to be a very cool direction. There is so much to do there and so many beautiful things to do! So I want to continue to practice this.

I really wanted to make a series of tropical prints, but I miscalculated my strength. And I just didn’t have time. But somehow leaving the New Year’s theme completely unattended is also a mess. That’s why we got this simple and very optimistic print. It was originally designed for complete sealing, well, to make it look completely New Year’s. But it so happened that there is also an option with only an inscription.

You can buy T-shirts, sweatshirts, cases and phone stickers with this print. Or you can just hang it on the wall so you don’t feel sad. 🙂 Link here

And since. For the New Year, I always see pretentious outfits in red and gold colors, but here I wanted to do something simpler, cozy and calm. So that’s how it happened.

I already mentioned that after trying to draw patterns during the marathon, I became very interested in exploring them further and trying them out. So, before the winter holidays, I just finished 2 patterns for printing on fabric. One is for a blanket that has already been printed, sent and donated. The second one I drew exclusively for myself to make leggings. But I had to draw it quickly, I was still sick there for a week, so I didn’t even show the patterns themselves on LJ.

So I finally took up the camera and can show not only the print itself, but also the fabric that turned out. She turned out so beautiful, I’m really, really happy!

The pattern itself looks like this:

The process of drawing it deserves a separate post, and I also hope to cross paths with my trusted photographer to show how the leggings turned out. The New Year was productive!

I will not reprint articles about Morris here, but I really want to just share information about this amazing artist and his works. I myself like complex lines and weaves in patterns, so in the works of William Morris you can find a lot for yourself and, so to speak, draw on them. So it will be both interesting and useful for all lovers of floral patterns.

William Morris was a representative of the Pre-Raphaelists. He lived and worked in the 19th century during the Victorian era.

In his work
not that it was based, but rather turned to the Middle Ages. I believed that ideally a master combines a technologist, a manufacturer, and an artist, doing the job from start to finish. In his workshops everything was done by hand.

One way or another, there is LJ, although many have stopped writing, there are those who are here, and whom I read regularly. I was probably in the last rows and finally attached Instagram and started managing it normally. So hello everyone!

I started dancing again, this time I got into the basics of classical dance, so I’m practicing batmans, arabesques and fifth position.

In general, it’s spring here, on March 8 it’s unusually warm and sunny. Therefore, all the trees bloomed: from almonds and peach to cherry plum.

And although it’s already spring outside and it’s time for walks, I managed to get sick. I don’t allow myself to relax, especially since I want to finish the print in time for the competition. That’s why I draw cats.

Spring and warmth to everyone! Write more often, I enjoy reading you.

I decided that it was worth writing a few words about what I use to study patterns. For in any topic, so as not to have the oppressive feeling that you missed something, it is better to spend part of the time studying literature and history, because then a normal picture fits into your head: this was then, but this came from that countries, and in this ornament there is symbolism characteristic of this. In addition, this knowledge significantly expands the understanding of the multiplicity of variations and provides a certain set of “bicycles” that can be used instead of wasting time on the pains of creativity.

So, what can you read about patterns?

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

For starters, there is a convenient book “How to Read an Ornament” by Clive Edwards, which contains the most structured and concise information on ornaments in general. Those. materials, techniques, types, elements, basically everything (except perhaps for a historical excursion). Each spread depicts a specific topic and contains illustrations from different countries and different times.

The second book is ”
Pattern Design
“by Sian Evans, in which the patterns are arranged specifically by era (although there are also sections by type). The book itself is of excellent quality with good paper and colorful illustrations. And the content in it is mainly pictures: examples with captions and a short introduction before each chapter (in English).

I also include the book by Owen Jones “The Grammar of Ornament”, 1856, as a must-have literature on ornaments. I think this is like a primer – a must read. True in English. But it will contain all the information: the chapters are arranged by era, each giving a basic description of that period with characteristic elements and compositions, as well as an explanation of the symbolism and construction of the elements.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

This book was reprinted several times by different publishers, but I did not come across it in paper form, nor in our online stores. But it is available in scanned and electronic versions, for example here on Rare Book Room
. Although I dream of getting my hands on a real one!

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

Another book on patterns is “Full Color Patters & Designs” by William Morris. This is a collection of works by the famous William Maurice. I don’t think that this could be very interesting for those who are interested in geometric or abstract patterns, but for general development I would advise everyone, because this master created his works on the basis of medieval principles of constructing ornaments, and he has very interesting and rich works in terms of composing the pattern itself. This is such a timeless classic!

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

I would also like to separately mention the Russian artist Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, who in his works used Russian ornaments as a frame for illustrations. His works themselves are very interesting, but I have never seen a greater treasure trove of Russian ornaments than his.

Read, watch, study! There is a lot of material, but it is very interesting! If you have favorite books, share them in the comments, I will open new book horizons for myself!

Actually, cats are not my thing, all the time they didn’t turn out cute, or beautiful, or in sketches, or in anything at all. But the company where I printed the tangerine print announced a competition for the best cat print in March with a gift sweatshirt and simply left me no choice!

I’ll say right away that I want the sweatshirt not for myself, but for my sister, so while drawing I kept thinking about her, and how she would walk around in my work and smile.

At first I tried to find some kind of shape of my own, or something, or a style for cats. I looked through a bunch of pictures, fell in love with Japanese neko-mime and sat down to sketch.

So 9 different cats were drawn. After basic processing, it was necessary to decide on the palette. Initially, I liked several selections with blue and turquoise colors, but they clearly did not suit the coloring of the fur. Therefore, the choice fell on a warm and bright tangerine palette, which suited perfectly.

Then I tried to join different seals into a pattern, this way and that, I rejected several options, but in the end I still built a seamless large pattern.

STAFF tracing paper for ink, roll 640mm x 20m, 30g/m2, 128998 - price, reviews, characteristics, photos - buy in Moscow and Russia

And – ta-dam! – this is what a sweatshirt with cats will look like! Now I’m waiting for the voting results. For anyone interested, here is the link to the album
with all participants, choose and like everything you like!

Well, I’ve crossed another barrier for myself and now I can calmly think about cats without being afraid to draw them. Now we have raccoons and other cute mimi animals in mind.

Everything is chaotic, there is no system or order in things (as I usually like), at times I don’t even know what to take on.

I caught myself thinking that I kind of put off many ideas until later, when I get promoted, when I have more subscribers, when there are more sales in the store, when something else will be better. And gradually all these super-ideas simply go nowhere without being done.

I had an idea to draw a bright tropical print with a hummingbird for the competition on March 8, then I realized that I wouldn’t have time and took a time out, which gradually turned into slow motion and endless ripple. I keep drawing and drawing poor plants, but I just can’t draw them. And during this time I already wanted to make a scarf, and changed my mind about putting it in the store. And I don’t know what to do with it now: I don’t want to put it in the store, because again I won’t win the competition, and again everything will be useless. Well, what else can you do with this drawing, because… it was originally drawn specifically for MaryJane for their large format printing. (The minute of self-flagellation is over).

In general, this very hummingbird is not even finished yet.

Suddenly it turned out that my cute little miracle planner was designed for 4-odd months, and because… It’s almost impossible for me to find the perfect notebook, so I decided to make it myself. I came across a convenient scrap piece, and added some extra stuff there. block sheets and kraft paper. But it’s impossible to do something just like that: the cover required special attention, so in the end I decided to use acrylic. Why, it’s still simple! or not?

It turned out not. There were clearly not enough colors for my scope, it was fun to paint, but I had no practice with acrylic, and even then it was very cool and very slow.

Suddenly some colors had a metallic sheen, I didn’t even know about acrylic like that. In the end, nothing happened, in principle I’m happy. I did it for myself, so I can do without unnecessary self-criticism.

In general, a week was practically spent on painting and design. But now I have a handy notepad!

I also received several things from PinkBus, including a bag of vegetables
(haha, I finally ordered it and it’s so cool) and a cosmetic bag with poppy seeds
. I like it: the quality is good and the item looks good. I’m pleased, now I want to draw a summer bag there too, for the sea.

Well, I try to go to training. Arabesques and Ron de jambes parterre are now on pointe shoes!

Spring smoothly turned into summer. It’s already warm here, and they’re even swimming (although the water is clearly cool). All fruits are starting earlier this year. I will update, so whoever wants to communicate and not lose touch, meet there!

Types of tracing paper

  • Pencil
matte, embossed without a glossy side – it is a transparent non-calendered paper, suitable for drawing and copying with a pencil on both sides; now it is used as an artistic material for copying or parallel sketching, by overlaying and drawing on top of the source.
  • Ink
with gloss, a paper base with a semi-gloss sheen on one side – thinner and more vulnerable, much thinner and mechanically weaker than pencil tracing paper, often breaks when wet on a wet line. Under mascara
both sides are suitable, the pencil rests only on the matte side – they drew with ink on the glossy side, gloss as a measure against the pigment falling into the depths of the fibers, and a drop in the contrast of the line.
  • Lavsan
with gloss film, where the glossy side is a supporting transparent film base ( lavsan
    , celluloid
    or vinyl
), noticeably thicker and stronger than both types of paper, and a thin rough matte coating for drawing is applied to the film itself – only one side suitable for drawing, less abrasive
for a sliding metal tool than pencil tracing paper.

Manufacturing

Tracing paper is usually made from bleached sulphate cellulose with the addition of some types of wood pulp, rag and cotton pulp without filler or with a small content of it and is well sized.

Tracing paper can also be made from ready-made glassine. Here is a recipe for making transparent paper from the book “1750 practical techno-chemical recipes” (5th ed., V.I. Gubinsky, p. 22): “Harvey, in London, treats the paper with drying oil and, after removing excess oily particles with gasoline , washed in a chlorine bath; then, after drying, it is treated again with hydrogen peroxide.”

High-quality tracing paper, used for copying drawings in ink and for blueprinting, is heavily moistened during production, calendered under high pressure rolls and oiled with film-forming substances. It is the high degree of compaction of relatively plain paper that partially ensures its transparency to light.

The main property of tracing paper is transparency. There are two ways to achieve it:

The second method is more effective, because along with high transparency it allows you to achieve high strength, but it is also more expensive. It is also possible to combine the two methods. It is this path that some modern domestic manufacturers have taken, which has made it possible to obtain a high-quality product while maintaining an acceptable price.

What kind of tracing paper (paper) is there

Most often, it differs in purpose and types of printing as follows:

  • for artistic works (tracing paper for drawing, drawing, painting; it is usually white and has a density of 40 to 480 g/sq. m.);
  • PPC paper, i.e. paper for electrophotographic devices (most often white and has a density of 90 to 480 gsm);
  • for traditional types of printing (mainly offset and screen, has a density from 40 to 480 g/sq.m.);

tracing paper for plotters (inkjet and pen).

tracing paper for plotters (inkjet and pen).

In the following we will focus mainly on tracing paper for electrographic and traditional printing.

Paper in rolls is intended mainly for technical work on plotters and laser copiers, as well as drawing with ink and pencil.

Sergey, Oksana, thank you very much! – something becomes clearer. I conclude that you can probably take a risk.

The fact is that some time ago I found my mother’s old album, with which she went to cutting and sewing courses thirty or forty years ago. The album is sewn from sheets of thin yellowish rough tracing paper, bound; half filled with my mother’s patterns and drawings made with colored pencils and a ballpoint pen. And all this still looks so beautiful, so aesthetically pleasing! which really makes me want to draw the same way – especially since my mother only filled the album a third of the way.

But leaving it in the album itself – it will be impossible to watch; It doesn’t interfere with patterns when one shines through the other, but it interferes with drawings. Therefore, it needs to be with a backing, and then why not frame it on the wall.

And a year ago, on one occasion, I bought white tracing paper, very rough, thick, like whatman paper. Mascara looks very beautiful on it, and so does the marker (liner); and very nice – colored pencil; It looks great framed on the wall too!

So I started thinking whether it’s possible to do easel graphics on tracing paper; and decided to ask my friends, in case anyone knows.

Sergey, tracing paper is convenient for me because I’m usually not able to confidently make a pen/ink drawing the first time, and I don’t have a light table.

Application

Before the era of computer-aided drafting, tracing paper was used in design and construction to jointly view floor plans or drawings of different levels of a mechanical structure to check the compatibility of different design sheets drawn by different people.

Tracing paper is sort of the equivalent of multiple “layers” in computer aided drafting. Currently, thick types of tracing paper are being produced that can pass under the rollers of a printer or copier without creasing or getting stuck. Such varieties are used for printing a drawing of a standard assembly or a drawing of a part, and when searching for an engineering solution through overlay on the main drawing.

Tracing paper sizes

The most commonly used tracing paper widths are 297 mm, 420 mm, 594 mm, 610 mm, 841 mm, 914 mm (imported) and 420 mm, 625 mm, 878 mm (Domestic). Office formats A4 and A3 are popular for printing on copiers and laser printers, and for offset and stencil printing, printing formats are preferable – 70 by 100 cm, etc. Modern tracing paper comes in the following types:

classic white;

all possible colors and shades;

matte, parchment imitation;

for gold and silver;

with various patterns;

with patterns that imitate water.

Traditional use of paper (tracing paper) – in booklets and calendars it is used as the second sheet after the cover. Tracing paper is used for inserts with the text of an invitation or postcard. Sometimes an envelope is made from tracing paper to match or the same color as the envelope. Business cards on tracing paper are also popular.

Tracing paper causes virtually no printing problems.

Methods of working with tracing paper

Offset printing

Tracing paper has proven itself well in offset printing, but the surface of tracing paper does not absorb moisture, so foil ink is recommended. Tracing paper does not dry well, so to avoid dragging paint from one sheet to another, it is better to unload the receiving area in a timely manner. You need to hold the finished prints in small piles because the paint needs to set.

Digital printing

Excellent recommendation for the use of cripples and in the form of printing. When printing on digital printer toners (Xerox, Canon, Konica Minolta, etc.), you must check the system on one sheet. Sometimes the toner does not bake onto the tracing paper correctly and falls off. When printing, it is necessary to take into account the temperature of the fuser, since you can lose not only the paper, but also the printing device.

It is better to glue tracing paper with synthetic glue, because water-dispersed glue can cause a wavy effect at the gluing site. Tracing paper is sensitive to changes in climatic conditions, which means that in order to avoid curling of the paper before and after printing, the material must be protected from drafts and changes in temperature and humidity.

A common property of all types of tracing paper is the ability to absorb moisture from the air and increased sensitivity to changes in conditions in the print shop, so the packaging should be opened only immediately before printing. During the printing process, stable humidity and temperature are maintained (20 °C and 50% humidity).

    • Sometimes difficulties arise during post-processing: the material is very dense and difficult to cut. The recommended height of the tracing paper stack when processing with a saber or guillotine cutter should be no more than 5 cm.

Before ordering printing on tracing paper, do not forget to consult with the technologist of the printing house where you plan to complete the order. When working with any designer paper, you need to study it, do a few test prints and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
