What is dpi

DPI is a characteristic of a printing device; it shows how many dots per inch a given device can print. 300Dpi is considered sufficient. But the fact is that in a captured digital photograph there may not be enough pixels for a given print area. Let’s calculate whether it is possible to stretch our photo to an area of ​​10 by 15 centimeters.

What is it.

When printing photographs on a minilab, the aspect ratio of the photo print is always unchanged and depends on its size (for example: 10×15 cm or 15×20 cm), and the aspect ratio of the original file is different.

The question arises: how to print, for example, a square image in a rectangular photograph format?

Why is this happening?

Different cameras have different matrices (and aspect ratios of the matrix). In addition, you can do arbitrary cropping of the image in graphics editors (for example Photoshop).

What to do if the photo has different dimensions?

Let’s say you compared the sizes of photographs for printing, the table of which was presented above, and found out that your photo has different sizes, what should you do in this case? If the aspect ratio is different, then simply increasing or decreasing the centimeters will not do. You will have to crop the image to the desired format.

Option 1.

The proportions of the sides of the image (source file) and photo paper are the same.

Options 2 and 3.

The aspect ratios of the image (source file) and the photo paper DO NOT MATCH.

There will be white margins on the photo or part of the image will have to be “cropped” when printing.

How to quickly crop a photo to the desired size?

There are two main ways.

The first way is to use the simplest image editing program. Almost all versions of the Windows operating system have the Paint program in the “Standard Programs” tab. Having opened a photo file in this program, you need to drag the border of the picture on the right or bottom and thus crop the photo to the desired size in pixels. The image size in pixels is shown at the bottom of the program window.

The second way is to use specialized image editing programs. The most commonly used program is Photoshop – it is the most popular and the most professional. I note that we need to precisely adjust the photo to the desired format (depending on the version of the program, the location of this button may change – just squeak it on the toolbar).

Select in the upper field the desired size ratio for the photo, according to the table of photo sizes for printing.

Now, with the right mouse button, move the image so that the part of the photo we need appears in the selected field. Finally, by double-clicking on the selected area, we crop the photo to the size we need. Don’t forget to save the resulting image. It is now ready to be printed on an inkjet or laser printer.

Where did the formats come from

And although anything can be printed, there are the most popular sizes for which frames are produced. Where did these sizes come from? They are related to camera sensor formats and common paper sizes.

Select the print format to match the proportions of the image.

For the most common frame proportions: 2:3 and 3:4, there are their own print formats (photo print sizes).

Convert centimeters to pixels taking into account dpi

Let’s say we want to print a photo 10 by 15 centimeters (actually a little more, taking into account the width of the roll – 10.2 cm by 15.2 cm).

1 cm=0.393701 inches. 300 pixels are printed per inch.

Multiply, it turns out that

10.2 * 0.393701 * 300 = 1205 points (i.e. pixels) required in height.

And the width required:

15.2 * 0.393701 * 300 = 1795 pixels.

That is, our size:

1205 to 1795, which is written in the right column.

Just remember to immediately select centimeters, not inches. And there you can also select Dpi, we have 300:

That is, our photo must be at least 1205 by 1795 pixels in size (more is possible).


We need a photograph of 20×30 cm, which means the aspect ratio of the photo paper is 2:3.

It is useless to guess what size in pixels your photo should be without taking into account Dpi. If the photo is artistic and quality is important, you can find out the DPI of the printer in the darkroom.

Paper sizes in the international ISO standard

In addition, there are international standards for paper sizes – A1, A2, A3, A4 and so on, which everyone has heard of. A4 is usually placed in the printer. The aspect ratio of all these sheets is 1.4:1 – that’s between 3:2 and 4:3.

When printing photo images, the color gamut of the photo is corrected. When correcting, several basic principles are used:

  1. If the main subject of the photo is people, correction is carried out to obtain the most correct skin tone, however, the overall color scheme may change and some colors may not be displayed accurately.
  2. When correcting landscapes, the basis is the correct display of the greenery of plants, or the color of the sky, if the main content of the image is the sky. For winter landscapes, the basis is to obtain the whiteness of the snow.

If you want to color correct your photographs yourself, when ordering you must indicate the option “without correction”, but you must remember that the image you see on your monitor may not match the print due to inconsistency in color reproduction characteristics Your monitor and printing machine. To obtain such a match, it is advisable to order a test print without correction, and then adjust the color rendition and monitor glow to correctly match the colors and balance the brightness of the image.

The fact is that camera matrices most often have a 3:2 or 4:3 format (the ratio of width to height, 3:2 is more common). Straight out of the camera, without processing, the image most often has the following aspect ratio:

Technical requirements for digital printing

To print photos without losing quality, you need to follow simple and simple rules for preparing a file for printing.

   When independently preparing a file for printing in a photo center, you need to take into account the format, size and resolution of the image. All manufacturers produce photo paper in certain, standard formats (from A6 to A0) and if the size does not fit into the paper format, then the details of the photo will be lost during printing (we will describe this below).

   In most cases, you print photographs in standard formats (10×15, 13×18, 15×21, 21×30, etc.). Each format corresponds to certain linear dimensions. The sizes of printed photographs in darkrooms and printers are slightly different. Below is a table of standard formats attached to a specific size and pixel size for printing on printers:

    *Pixels are the points that make up a digital image. The more points, the more details we can see.

    Image resolution (dpi)
– a number that relates the size in pixels and the linear size of the image. This photograph parameter is measured in dots (pixels) per inch (inch = 25.4 mm) – dpi (

. The minimum resolution that is acceptable for printing photographs of acceptable quality is 150 dpi.

  The recommended resolution for high-quality photographs is 300 dpi.

Important to know!

    When printing a low resolution image in a large format, a blurred or pixelated effect will be noticeable. Such prints will not be of high quality. When you print photos from a mobile phone, the images may be of lower quality than when you print from a digital camera. Artificially enlarging or zooming in on an image can also lead to a loss in photo quality.

   Now let’s look at the discrepancy between the file size and the photo format. If you print a photo with the file automatically (in the printer program) adjusted to a standard format, the details of the photo along the edges will be lost, or white margins will be left on the image on two edges.
