I’ll go further to make sure that my conclusions are correct. Study No. 2: the absorbency of towels

In this test, I will immerse a sheet of each paper towel in water and measure how long it takes to completely wet it. This is an indicator of how quickly the napkin absorbs liquid. What is this for? In reality, the faster a towel absorbs water, the less time we spend drying wet hands.

Next, I will weigh each sample wet and find in numerical terms the absorbency of the paper, which is calculated by the formula: (m wet – m dry) / m dry (where m wet is the mass of a wet napkin, m dry is the mass of a dry napkin ).

Based on the results of the second absorbency test, I was convinced that the single-layer Tork towel, as in the previous test, was not up to par, but among the 2-layer ones there were favorites: Tork H2 and Teres, then Veiro.

To finally rank my favorites, I will conduct one more test for the ability to absorb liquid. Test No. 3: the absorbency of towels

For this experiment, I will drop approximately the same amount of liquid from a pipette onto each napkin of the test samples and see what mark it leaves on the towel. The larger the wet spot, the better and faster the napkin absorbs the liquid – for clarity, red fruit drink.

Based on 3 absorbency tests, it is clear that Tork 1-ply towels are behind their 2-ply counterparts. The 2-ply test towels share the lead with varying success from test to test, i.e. all of them have good absorbency, which is an important consumer property of paper towels.

Let’s return to density: is it true that the denser the towel, the better it absorbs liquid. Here are the density conclusions obtained earlier:

In descending order of density, the towels are as follows: Tork 2-ply, Veiro, Tork 1-ply and Teres.

But absorbency tests revealed a different picture. Therefore, there is no direct relationship between the density of towels and their absorbency. However, such a characteristic as density does not appear when describing paper towels.

Summarizing everything that has been said and seen, you can pay close attention to the economic component when choosing a particular brand of paper towels.

If you are a fan of Tork, I recommend 2-layer ones; when used in comparison with 1-layer ones, the benefits are obvious!

From physics lessons, density is the ratio of mass to surface area, expressed in g/m2.

I find the mass of one napkin by dividing the mass of the pack by the number of sheets in it. Isn’t it easier to weigh one napkin, you say? Firstly, the mass of one napkin is negligible and the accuracy of the scales at my disposal does not allow me to measure it.

The number of sheets of TORK towels in a pack corresponds to those declared by the manufacturer, which cannot be said about Veiro and Teres. Based on the results obtained, I calculated the price for 1 napkin, because no one would object that you can only compare identical values.

I found out the mass of 1 pack, the number of sheets in it. To calculate the density, it remains to find the area of ​​the sheet by measuring and multiplying the length and width. Using simple arithmetic calculations I find the mass of one sheet.

To do this, I cut all our “experimental” specimens into strips 2 cm wide and labeled them No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the order they are located in the tables. I dipped each sample into the colored liquid for 5 seconds and measured how high it rose on a piece of the towel. The higher the column, the more liquid the napkin has absorbed.
