Paint solvents – properties and applications

Depending on the type of dye, different paint solvents are used. The properties of solvents for different types of paints are different. What solvent can be used for gouache
? Of course water! Water is the most famous solvent of organic substances.

Solvent
for paint, it is a single or multicomponent organic compound that is a liquid. Used to dissolve natural and synthetic resins, as well as to bring paint compositions to a working consistency.

Requirements for paint solvents

  • The solvent must be inert
    .
  • The solvent must not react with the paint and the surface being painted.
  • The solvent must be sufficiently volatile
so that it evaporates from the paint layer during the drying process.

According to their purpose, paint solvents are divided:

  • for oil paints and varnishes, растворители для краски применяются разные в зависимости от типа краски
  • for alkyd paints,
  • for pentaphthalic paints,
  • bitumen,
  • for epoxy resins,
  • for perchlorovinyl varnish,
  • for nitrocellulose.

Simple paint solvents are pure organic substances used to dissolve films or distribute a substance over a surface (acetone). Turpentine
– colorless or slightly colored, transparent, flammable liquid with a characteristic odor (flames at 30 – 32 degrees). Produced by dry distillation of pine wood
(wood) or by distilling the resin of coniferous trees.

Use of solvents

Wood turpentine
It is further purified and the dyes contained in it are removed. Gum turpentine
(turpentine oil) is a pure, simple, less pungent turpentine that is non-toxic. This is a solvent for oil-based, alkyd varnishes and paints, as well as for degreasing surfaces for subsequent painting.

Acetone
. It is highly soluble in water, so when using nitro varnishes and paints as solvents, you must make sure that water cannot penetrate.

White spirit
(gasoline-solvent) is a product of petroleum refining. Designed for diluting oil paints and for dissolving old coatings of oil paints and varnishes.

Solvent 646 (P-646)
– for diluting nitrocellulose paints and varnishes: nitro enamels, nitro varnishes, general purpose nitro putties.

Solvent RE-4V
– colorless liquid. The solvent is toxic. Used for diluting glyphthalic and pentaphthalic drying oils and paints, as well as bitumen and asphalt varnishes.

Combined solvents
– These are mixtures of various simple solvents. They are much cheaper, but their quality is higher. These solvents are especially effective for complex paint compositions.
