How to choose paper towels, characteristics

Paper towels in double-layer rolls, 6 and 12 rolls per package

Paper towels were invented in America in the twenties of the 20th century. By 1931 they had spread all over the world.

Paper towel consumption is most popular in North America. Factories produce 50 trillion rolls per year. Today they can be found in almost every home or professional kitchen, as well as in public washroom dispensers. Double-ply paper towel rolls

very convenient if you need to wipe a surface, remove excess moisture from something, or simply wipe your hands.

The Enviro Extreme brand is created entirely from recycled fibers from post-consumer white paper. The paper is fed into a large machine called a “reject grinder,” which processes it into fibers. They are then mixed with water to obtain a porridge-like substance – cellulose. The filter removes all non-paper materials, such as plastic windows from envelopes, iron staples, metal paper clips, etc. A special mechanism then blows air through the pulp to remove the ink. The ink moves away from the cellulose and sticks to air bubbles, which rise up and evaporate. The pulp goes under a press, which removes water from it using rollers. The screw conveyor breaks the pulp and sends it to the next conveyor where it is bleached with peroxide bleach and then thoroughly washed with clean water.

Next, a waterproof agent – a special chemical – is applied and formed into sheets of paper 2.4 meters wide. Waterproofing protects paper towels from moisture; without it, a paper towel would be as fragile as toilet paper. After the paper is formed, the mechanism winds it into huge rolls. From these rolls paper

ends up on a conveyor belt that turns it into paper towels. Two rolls supply the tape at the same time. Each one forms a layer or sheet of two-ply paper towel. Before the layer reaches the conveyor belt, factory quality control checks wet and dry samples. A special mechanism stretches the layer of paper until it breaks, and thus determines the strength of the paper. Embossing on paper towels is not just a decoration, it adds greater absorbency by creating empty spaces between two layers of the towel.

On a conveyor, one layer passes under a patterned roller, which presses a textured design onto the paper. Another roller applies a thin layer of glue to the raised part of the paper. In the next step, the embossed and glued layer is applied on top of a simple, even layer. A fine-toothed blade then marks a cutting line (perforation) along which individual strips of paper will be torn off. The following mechanism winds 100 strips around a cardboard cartridge. A mechanism called a “gatherer” transfers these rolls to a cutting station where a rotating saw cuts these rolls, 4 rolls at a time. At the next station, rolls for packaging are formed – 6 or 12 pieces each. The packaging mechanism places the rolls into finished bags and seals them at high temperature.

One of the most profitable areas of business is the production of toilet paper. Everyone needs these products, so the market for their sale is quite wide. In this field you can find huge opportunities for earning money. Today the range of such goods is quite diverse.

Toilet paper is produced in different types: single-layer, multi-layer, corrugated, scented, with a cardboard or plastic sleeve, etc. In addition, the rolls vary in size. Paper towels are widely used in households. Their production is similar to the production of toilet paper. By the way, the range of towels is also quite large.

Having decided to engage in this type of business, in addition to the listed goods, think about the production of napkins – sanitary and table napkins. Of course, like any business, this one must begin by drawing up a plan in which all the points will be outlined. When opening a mini-factory, you will need to register. It is better to opt for the LLC form.

This will allow cooperation with large organizations on a contractual basis. The cost of registration will be approximately 10,000 rubles. In addition, you will need to obtain a license. To start the workshop it will be necessary to have a conclusion from the sanitary and epidemiological service. Having legally registered the production, proceed to the next step – decide on the raw materials and their delivery.

The raw material can be waste paper or paper base. Having chosen the first option, you should take into account that you will need to purchase expensive equipment, because waste paper must be prepared for the process and processed in a special way. It needs to go through several stages, such as washing, grinding, and adjusting the concentration.

All work is labor-intensive and will require special training of employees. Purchasing paper base will significantly speed up and reduce the cost of the process. In this case, complex machines are not needed. In addition to the main raw materials, you will need cardboard for the sleeves, packaging paper and glue. You can buy everything you need for little money.

 Once you select the right supplier, build a strong relationship with them. Please note that materials must be accompanied by certificates. The base is purchased in rolls on a sleeve up to two meters long and weighing up to six hundred kilograms.

Paper production has several stages: – the base is placed on a special drum; – it is passed through perforation blocks; – the paper is wound onto sleeves; – rolls of the required size are formed using a cutting machine.

Having decided on the technological process, it is necessary to purchase the necessary equipment for production: – a machine for cutting rolls; – a reel-unwinding machine; – a table for gluing; – an automatic packaging machine. To save on raw materials, it is worth purchasing an additional bushing device.

In this case, you will not need to buy ready-made bushings. This investment will pay off relatively quickly, since the cost of the bushing is much less than its price from suppliers. Of course, you can make a budget version of toilet paper without a sleeve.

It is better for novice entrepreneurs to give their preference to semi-automatic machines. Such machines are simpler and cheaper in cost. If the volume of output is planned to be large, it is better to fully automate the process.

When you decide to purchase used equipment, think carefully about whether you are confident that it is in full working order.

There are much better ways to save: – purchase production lines on lease for the purpose of subsequent purchase; – purchase equipment in China, where they offer high-quality products at a relatively low price. The quality of the equipment significantly affects the quality of the products, which in turn will determine your income.

When choosing a machine tool supplier, you should pay attention to whether warranty service is provided and whether the supplier carries out commissioning and commissioning. In the future, the business can be expanded and equipment for the production of paper towels and napkins can be purchased.

To make paper, you will need a room with an area of about 120 square meters with a ceiling height of 4 meters. To avoid any disputes from the sanitary and fire services, the premises must meet certain requirements. These include: electricity, water supply, sewerage.

Next, divide the room into three zones:

– warehouse to store materials; – production workshop; – warehouse for finished products.

Rooms should also be provided for the accountant and managers if the administration will be located in the same building. But the best option would be an office within the city, where it will be much more convenient for employees to get to clients.

Paper towels. production and packaging

You’ve probably already read the legend about how paper towels were used in Ancient Babylon. If not, then we suggest that you read the article “Paper towels. A little history.” At the very end, we promised to talk a little about how paper towels appeared in the modern world.

And this happened in the relatively recent year 1931. It was then that the owner of the Scott Paper Company, Arthur Scott, came across a newspaper article dating back to 1907. The article talked about the epidemic of colds that swept through Philadelphia at the beginning of the 20th century.

One of the Philadelphia teachers convinced the management of her school that the cause of the infection was a rag towel, which all the students in her class used to wipe their faces and hands. And she suggested that instead of rag towels, use carbon paper, previously cut into squares.

This approach made it possible to stop the epidemic.

Arthur Scott liked the idea and one day, when his company received a batch of defective toilet paper, he decided to bring this idea to life.

The toilet paper received by Scott Paper had an increased density and was completely unsuitable for its intended use. Then Arthur ordered the toilet paper strips to be perforated in such a way that the perforated strip could easily be divided into segments.

The first industrially produced paper towels were ready! And they received the simple name Sani-Towels.

Scott Paper immediately launched a large-scale advertising campaign whose most famous slogan was: “Use it yourself, and only once!” Scott Paper’s clients include large industrial enterprises, factories, as well as smaller firms engaged in various types of activities.

At that time, it was a product that today would be called “innovative” without a shadow of a doubt.

Scott Paper continued to increase production and soon the company gained a leading position in the market selling toilet paper, paper towels, and all kinds of cleaning equipment. In addition, the company’s engineers have come up with special devices for convenient storage and dispensing of paper towels in rolls.

These devices are still called paper towel holders or paper towel dispensers. Their purpose, we repeat, is compact storage and dosed dispensing of paper towels.

A certain Paul Brown, the company’s sales manager, liked to say that selling paper towels without a dispenser is comparable to selling disposable razors that have no blades.

Scott Paper practically conquered the American market for hygiene products and now not only “polished” the paper supplied to it in rolls, now it manufactured it itself!

The company made paper from cellulose, a material left over from wood processing. So-called “virgin cellulose” is an excellent material for the production of high-quality paper towels.

Such towels are distinguished by the special integrity of the fabric, the so-called “airiness” and perfectly absorb moisture.

The secret of the “airiness” lies in the fact that during production, thin layers of paper are intertwined in a special way and from this the paper towels seem to be filled with droplets of air. A person using such towels experiences the most pleasant sensations.

Today, many manufacturers of paper towels, including the Tork company, based on environmental considerations, use waste paper as a raw material for the production of paper towels. The process of producing paper towels from recycled paper is more complex than production from virgin pulp.

Waste paper must first be carefully sorted and separated from various types of garbage. Then the waste paper is washed and the resulting material is separated according to the color of the resulting raw material. This is done in order to improve the quality of the finished product – paper towels.

Next, when the raw materials are cleaned and sorted, conventional technologies are applied, as if paper towels were made from “virgin cellulose.” Thus, the Tork company, and in Russia the company that sells its products, Eco-Service Company LLC, are making their feasible contribution to the common cause of preserving the environment on our planet.

But let’s get back to paper towels. Once produced, they should be packaged carefully and economically. And pack them in such a way that they fit inside the Tork towel dispenser, for example, without any problems.

For this standard arrangement, standard methods of laying paper towels have been invented. Today, sheet paper towels have become very popular, therefore, in the classification “by type of installation,” sheet paper towels have received the largest representation. Let’s briefly look at the most popular of them:

  • the most popular is the so-called ZZ
    folding sheet paper towels (sometimes referred to as
    V
    addition)
    . With this type of folding, each previous paper towel stretches each subsequent towel to a certain position. Such towels, pulled out in portions, make their consumption more economical. Special windows in paper towel dispensers allow you to monitor their consumption and replenish paper towel supplies in a timely manner;
  • Interfold folding type for paper towels
    similar to the ZZ type of folding sheet paper towels. But due to more compact installation, this type of folding allows manufacturers, for example, the company Tork
    , make paper towel holders more compact. The principle of feeding from the dispenser is similar to the principle used for ZZ folding of sheet paper towels;
  • traditional roll fold
    , when the paper towel roll is rolled into a roll in the usual manner. The supply from the paper towel dispenser is the most uniform, and the rolls do not unwind to the floor. The paper towels themselves are torn off in equal segments (portions).

To summarize, let’s say that today paper towels have become a common, invisible and indispensable hygiene attribute of any enterprise. A wide range of paper towels and paper towel holders are presented in the catalog of Eco-Service Company LLC.

Turn on the saving mode when using sheet paper towels – Rosel service – professional cleaning solutions

In this article we will take a closer look at this type of towels for dispensers such as sheet paper towels
and finally, we will understand how cleaners can save or optimize their budget according to the principle of optimality (the notorious “price-quality”).

Types of folding of sheet towels.

There are at least four folds, if we take the Essity classification (TM Tork): Z, ZZ, M (W), C. However, in fact, for all manufacturers, folds can be reduced to two main options: V-fold (the most common) and Z-addition. It is worth noting that many people confuse Z-fold and ZZ-fold, although these are different types of folds, with different sheet sizes (often). So, ZZ-addition is the same as V-addition. Historically in TM Tork it is called ZZ-addition, hence the confusion. V-fold has one fold line, Z-fold has two, so when folded, the width of V-fold towels is greater than Z. All other things being equal, a Z-fold sheet is more expensive. This is due to production technology. Let’s take note of this for now.

Size.

The standard V-fold size is 23 by 23 cm, however, many manufacturers reduce the size of the sheet in order to save money. It should be noted that this does not entail any increase in consumption, because the sheet is not 100% used when wiping, which means that such savings for manufacturers are justified. But pay attention that the size of the sheet in length and width is at least 21 cm, since in this case an incomplete pack in the dispenser may lose its horizontal position and make it difficult to access the sheet. The issue of sheet sizes for Z-folding is not relevant; depending on manufacturers, sizes vary from 21 to 24 cm in length and width.

Number of sheets in a pack.

Here, packaging of 200 and 250 sheets per pack is generally accepted. Obviously, 250 sheets are more economical (any packaging with a larger capacity is more profitable per unit). Here, too, many manufacturers, in an attempt to reduce costs, do not report sheets (for example, with the declared 200, only 190 are actually found in the pack), so it is important to deal with large and trusted manufacturing companies.

Raw materials.

Paper towels made from 100% cellulose are soft and better absorbent, but they are also more expensive than products made from waste paper or combined raw materials.

Number of layers.

Everything is simple here. If the end consumer is very demanding when it comes to towels, then, of course, the choice in favor of two-layer towels is obvious. However, if your goal is savings, then single-layer towels, despite their greater consumption, will provide it, since the budget for using single-layer towels (all other things being equal) will be less.

Density (Grammage).

The minimum density that will not be perceived by the average consumer as insufficient is 25 g/sq.m for single-layer towels, 35 g/sq.m for double-layer towels. This is where the main differences between manufacturers are revealed, since this significantly affects the cost. For example, the values of TM Tork for the popular article number of single-layer towels 120218 (combined raw materials) are 41 g/sq.m! Not many manufacturers can boast of such density in their two-layer products.

Embossing.

It is essentially a distinctive sign of manufacturers. Essity (TM Tork) has leaves of three shades, indicating one of the quality categories: Basic, Advanced, Premium. Veiro Professional has its own individual and complex pattern, PRO Tissue has its own “snowflake”.

Additional consumer characteristics.

Whiteness.

A towel is perceived as white at approximately 70% of this indicator. It can definitely be called white with a whiteness index of 80%.

Softness

as well as

absorbency

are directly related to the material and its density, the maximum softness and absorbency of 100% cellulose.

Ways to save money when using sheet towels.

So, let’s summarize. A schematic of the saving mode for using sheet towels is shown below
and is determined by three steps: from primary to final:

STEP 1
Transition from Z addition to V.

STEP 2
Transition from cellulose to waste paper.

STEP 3
Transition from 2-layer to 1-layer.

Density of paper towels

From physics lessons, density is the ratio of mass to surface area, expressed in g/m2.

I find the mass of one napkin by dividing the mass of the pack by the number of sheets in it. Isn’t it easier to weigh one napkin, you say? Firstly, the mass of one napkin is negligible and the accuracy of the scales at my disposal does not allow me to measure it.

Photos 2, 3, 4, 5. Weighing packs of towels Tork Xpress Advanced H2 Z, Tork Universal H3 ZZ, Veiro Professional Comfort Z, Teres Elite Z.

Table 2. Comparison of the actual cost of one sheet.

The number of sheets of TORK towels in a pack corresponds to those declared by the manufacturer, which cannot be said about Veiro and Teres. Based on the results obtained, I calculated the price for 1 napkin, because no one would object that you can only compare identical values.

I found out the mass of 1 pack, the number of sheets in it. To calculate the density, it remains to find the area of the sheet by measuring and multiplying the length and width. Using simple arithmetic calculations I find the mass of one sheet.

Table 3. Results of measuring the density and geometry of the towel sheet.

In descending order of density, the towels were arranged as follows: Tork 2-ply, Veiro, Tork 1-ply and Teres.

I will assume that the thicker the towel, the better its absorbent properties.

Towel sizes

Another important characteristic depends on the purpose and type of towel – the size of the towel. Like other textile products, towels have their own accepted standards for length and width. In some countries the numbers may vary slightly, but in general they are as follows:

  • towels 30×30
    or 30×50
    called guest (or toilet), used in the bathroom for hands, sometimes in the kitchen;
  • towels 50×70
    – this is the standard for a universal kitchen towel;
  • towels 50×85
    or 50×90
    used for face, washing;
  • towels 50×100
    also often used for the face or as a small shower;
  • towels 70×140
    considered average baths, suitable for showers;
  • towels 80×160
    – classic baths;
  • towels 90×160
    or 100×150
    – large bath towels in which you can thoroughly wrap yourself. They are often used on beaches, in baths, saunas, massage rooms as small terry sheets;
  • towels 80×200
    useful in a sauna, steam bath or massage;
  • towels sizes 150×200, 150×250, 160×200, 175×200, 175×250
    etc. can be called real terry sheets and can be used on beaches.

Types of towels – fabrics

Depending on the method of weaving the threads, there are several main types of towels, each of which has its own advantages. Terry towels are woven with four threads so that thin loops are formed on the surface of the fabric.

They give the accessory softness and volume. Terry towels attract with comfort, convenience, excellent absorbency, hypoallergenicity and resistance to washing. Velor towels are created when cotton is woven into four strands and the terry is simply cut off.

As a result, the surface becomes shiny and looks amazing. Velor towels are good for the skin, but they absorb moisture a little worse than terry ones. When making waffle towels, a different type of weaving is used, as a result of which cotton threads form cells on the surface of the fabric, like on waffles (hence the name).

Such models also perfectly absorb water and are used for dishes, hands, glasses, etc. The production of Jacquard towels requires special machines that tightly weave the cotton threads in a specific way to form the pattern. The products are slightly more expensive than their counterparts.

Towel composition – materials

The most popular and respected material in the production of towels is cotton. It perfectly absorbs moisture, is known for durability, environmental friendliness, hypoallergenicity, softness and quality. 100% cotton towels usually cost more than their synthetic or semi-synthetic counterparts, but they also last much longer and perform better.

In order not to make a mistake with your choice and buy a quality towel, you need to carefully study product labels. Many manufacturers use tricks and add special notes to the clear inscriptions in the composition of the towel. For example, “100% cotton (M)” indicates the addition of artificial fibers, “100% cotton (PC)” indicates the addition of polyester-cotton (polycotton).

In addition to cotton, towels often include other types of fabrics. The cheapest option is to add synthetics. It is better if it is viscose fiber, for example, modal. Modal makes the towel more fluffy, beautiful, soft and quite durable. The addition of other types of synthetics is bad for absorbency, and this blended towel can leave a wet feeling on the skin.

Recently, bamboo towels (or a combination of cotton and bamboo fiber) have also become popular. Bamboo towels absorb water perfectly (even better and faster than cotton), have a special shine and soft touch, and have unique antibacterial properties.

In addition to cotton, towels may also contain lyocell (eucalyptus fiber). Lyocell absorbs moisture one and a half times better, dries faster, does not accumulate dust and odors, and does not cause allergies. The surface of the towel becomes smooth and soft like silk.

You can wash such products without problems in a washing machine, but they still wear out a little faster. In addition, cotton’s neighbors in towels are often linen and silk. Linen is durable, does not reduce absorbency, and guarantees a massage and lifting effect when used. Adding a small amount of silk makes the towel as smooth and shiny as possible.

The rolls are soft, durable, and snow-white. let’s talk about paper towels and toilet paper

What requirements do we most often place on paper towels, napkins, and toilet paper? They should be soft and gentle, the child will say. It is good to absorb moisture, the housewife will add. Under no circumstances should they tear at the slightest touch, the head of the family will clarify. Well, grandparents will remind you of the aesthetics and snow-whiteness, which has always been associated with purity.

The products of the “White Bear” brand are just like that, for the whole family: softer than tender, stronger than durable, whiter than white. More details

The range of products can be found on the company’s website. There seem to be no tricks: napkins, toilet paper, towels, but here they take the quality of their products very seriously and value their earned reputation. The key to success is in-house production, compliance with standards and technologies, streamlined logistics and work without intermediaries. The attitude towards customers is always individual. Up to the possibility of branding napkins, applying logos, drawings, which is especially important for hotels and restaurants. The price list can be downloaded here on the website. A professional manager will give qualified answers to all questions (just order a call back).

The mission of “White Bear” is compliance with high standards and only high-quality products. Work in accordance with GOST involves control of raw materials and chemical analysis. Paper made from cellulose is of higher quality than paper made from recycled materials. But it is cellulose that can (under certain conditions) become a source of toxic formaldehyde. This is unthinkable in the production of hygiene products.

Therefore, strict control has been introduced at all stages of production of “White Bear” products. That is why it is so delicate, soft, white, durable, with easy-to-tear perforation.

It is important to remember that toilet paper is made from cellulose (virgin raw material):

  • environmentally friendly (does not contain chlorine),
  • absorbs moisture well (patterned – better than smooth),
  • does not tear in the hands, but dissolves in water,
  • has a different number of layers (and therefore different degrees of strength).

, which means this product meets all the requirements (for both children and adults).
